09 09 09_0755Our color for the week is Green, but we are always looking for opportunities to incorporate other colors into our learning.  No Time for Flash Cards featured a stoplight activity which was fun for my girls and lasted longer then 5 minutes. You can head over there for detailed directions or read how we did it below.

For this activity we used 1 sheet each of red, yellow, and green contruction paper.  That was plenty for my 3 kids.  You also need another sheet of paper for each child to make the stop light on.    I sat the kids down on the family room floor.  We started w/ one color and a bowl and proceeded to rip, tear, and whine about not being able to shred paper on demand.  Funny how they can tear things up that I actually need, but can’t rip when asked to.   We then did the same thing with the other 2 colors.  In the end, everyone had a fun time shredding paper and the bowls only got knocked over 3 or 4 times.

We then moved to the dining room table.  I quickly drew a square with three circles on each kids paper to resemble a stoplight.  My oldest is 5, so to make this somewhat on her age level, I also drew a line by each color and had her write each color out.  We used 2 bottles of glue, the oldest working mostly alone and worked down from red to the green.  First spreading the glue where the red light would be and placing red shreds of paper on that spot.  We continued that until all 3 colors had been done. In the end, everyone had very nice stoplights. Some had more shreds then others, but I think that shows the age of the kid, the less paper, the younger.

This defintely is an activity I recommend. We had a great time and I enjoy things that last more then 1 minute.
